Have you looked at your bathroom and thought, “Ugh. I hate this space!” Or maybe your bathroom hasn’t been remodeled in this decade–or century. Maybe you want to turn your bathroom into a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation. You might also want it to function better and be more personalized. If you agreed with any of those statements, it might be time for a remodel

ing project.

Before you contact a contractor, it’s important to do some research into potential cost and timeline. On average, a bathroom remodel costs about $10,000 and takes roughly a week to complete. You will be completely out of a bathroom while the remodeling is happening. Once you have some ideas about funding and what to do for a bathroom for a week, it’s time to call a few contractors and get some bids.

More homeowners, it seems, are having their bathtubs removed and installing walk-in showers. These are convenient and adaptable for most spaces. Walk-in showers can have benches installed or shelves for shampoos and soaps as well as a place to put your foot while shaving your legs. Another walk-in shower feature that’s popular is having multiple showerheads spaced in different places for a spa-like atmosphere. Some showerheads can have soothing rainfall features, allowing you to feel like you’re in a rainfall.

Tile is the most popular choice for walk-in showers, and you can find tile in all sorts of sizes, shapes, and colors. It really depends on the look you want for your bathroom. You’ll also pick out shower flooring, which is usually tile and complements the shower walls. Another shower feature you might want is a glass shower door. If you had shower doors before and didn’t like them, check out the latest designs in glass shower doors. They’ll add a fresh look to your bathroom.

Some homeowners prefer their bathtubs to showers, and freestanding bathtubs, especially oval-shaped tubs, are in style because they provide an optimal soaking experience. You can have a smart bathtub installed, which has Bluetooth, aromatherapy, and hydrotherapy jets; it’s a much more sophisticated tub than the old jetted tubs of the 1990s. Materials for these different types of tubs include acrylic, stone resin, copper, and cast iron. Acrylic and stone resin are more budget friendly compared to copper and cast iron. As for colors, matte black is popular for freestanding tubs; white is also popular. But other colors for tubs are back; you can expect to pay more for those.

Flooring will be another choice you’ll need to make; happily, there are many different types of flooring available for your space.  Choose flooring that is water resistant. Porcelain tile, for example, is excellent for a bathroom floor because it can come in many styles. It’s also water resistant. Laminate flooring is another option to complement your bathroom design, but again, make sure it’s water resistant. You don’t want warping or mold to occur.

Finding the right cabinet is important. Yes, you can get a unit that includes a cabinet, sink, and countertop from a big box store or online, or you can have a nice cabinet made and choose your own countertop and sink. It is less expensive to buy a cabinet unit, but if personalization is important to you, I recommend choosing your cabinet, counter, and sink along with fixtures. Your bathroom will be uniquely you.

Lighting trends this year feature bold and unique designs and shapes that make a statement. One of the newest trends for 2025 is a bathroom medicine cabinet that lights up! You can find different styles in these, and they’re a unique option. They range in price from approximately $160-1,500 (or more, depending on size and brand.)

Bath bars and wall sconces have been updated and provide great light for your bathroom. LED lighting is popular as well for its longevity and minimal electricity use. There are considerations for the type of lighting you want:

Task Lighting - this is the illumination needed in order to get exactly the right edge on your look, whether you’re putting on make-up or shaving. This is usually found in adjustable lighting or down lighting fixtures above vanities.

Ambient Lighting - With ambient lighting, such as up lighting wall fixtures, the light is above eye level and reflects into the room from the lamp as well as off the surrounding surfaces. It is all-purpose, generalized lighting, for those quick bathroom visits.

Accent Lighting - When you want to call attention to the decorative design of the room, or add a little mood lighting, go with up/down lighting fixtures to build in some accent lighting.

Make certain your lighting is rated for damp or wet spaces.

Sink options have expanded. Although vessel sinks are trending out, vessel-inspired sinks are popular. These come in black and white, but other color options are also available. They don’t have to be round either. They can be square or oblong, whatever suits you and your bathroom.

These sinks are made with different materials as well, which varies the price.  Choosing a vessel-inspired sink adds sophistication and your own mark on your space.

No one really thinks about toilets, unless they need one, but the selection of toilets has expanded in recent years. You can still find the traditional two-piece toilet with a round or elongated seat, but now there are one-piece toilets. The advantage of a one-piece toilet is it’s easy to clean, uses space more efficiently, and is durable. You’ll also have to decide if you want a single flush or a dual flush commode. And finally, bidets are gaining in popularity. Bidet toilets are one full unit, and they tend to cost between $500-1500 dollars. A less expensive option, if you’re interested in having a bidet, is to find either a bidet toilet seat, where the bidet is attached to the seat, or an attachment, which goes under the seat.

As for hardware finishes, like faucets, shower heads, and toilet paper holders, matte black fixtures are popular. You can still find chrome finishes as well. Designers are shifting, though, to “living finishes,” such as brass, graphite, matte white, and gold. Currently, though, it’s difficult to find those finishes in stock, at least in Colorado. Paint is another choice you’ll want to make, and currently, earthy tones, like taupe and warm gray are popular. Other trending paint colors are calming tones, like blue and seafoam green.

Once you’ve made your decisions about your bathroom design, your contractor will begin work. Unless they run into unexpected problems, like mold, you’ll soon have the bathroom space you want. With all the decisions you have to make regarding your soon-to-be-new bathroom, it can feel overwhelming. Hopefully, you’ve found a few ideas from me to help get you started.
